  • 50% of working Americans admit to having back pain each year.
  • Back pain leads to 264 million lost work days each year in the US – that’s about 2 days per full time worker each year.

The Good News

  • A majority of back pain can be treated successfully and with conservative measures (no surgery or prolonged medications), using physical therapy.
  • More severe cases of low back pain that will need surgery, will recover better with a rehabilitation program before the surgery.
  • Many people can dramatically reduce their chances of ever having low back pain by following some key principles and doing a little bit of work.

Some Tips To Prevent Back Pain

  •  Strengthen your core!  You’ve likely heard this before but did you know there are good and bad ways to do this?  Some of the exercises out there can actually put you at greater risk of injuring your back. (We’ll go over tips in the video)
  • Watch your posture!  If you want some quick tips about good posture check out this Blog Link (click here).  One key aspect to reducing pain in your back is ensuring that your joints remain in a “neutral position” whenever possible.  (Again more in the video).
  • Motion is Lotion!  Your back has over 70 joints and 17 discs that all require movement for maximal circulation of nutrients into the joint/tissue and waste products out of the joint/tissue.  That means if you have a job or daily activity that does not require a lot of movement you are going to need to make extra time in your day to get up and move in order to keep your back healthy and strong!
  •  Watch your mechanics!  Maintaining a neutral spine during lifting and carrying tasks is so important.  Muscles and joints are more likely to be injured when they are out of a neutral position and out of an optimal length tension relationship (more on this in the video below).
